Ah the Americano, this low-alcohol and incredibly refreshing cocktail is the quintessential Italian aperitivo. Originally called the Milano-Torino, the name changed during Prohibition due to its popularity with American tourists. One of its main ingredients, Campari, was created in 1860 by Gaspare Campari. His recipe, which Campari keeps confidential, contained more than 60 natural ingredients including herbs, spices, barks, and fruit peels. Together they create a liqueur that is spicy, sweet, herbal, and a bit bitter.
Another fun fact – the Americano is the first cocktail that James Bond orders in Casino Royale, long before he orders his more well-known drink of choice, the martini.

1 1/2 oz Campari
1 1/2 oz sweet vermouth
1 orange half-wheel
3 oz chilled club soda
Pour the Campari and vermouth into a collins or rocks glass and stir. Add large ice cubes, top off with the club soda, and garnish with the orange half-wheel. Close your eyes and imagine you’re sipping on one of these in a caffé overlooking a piazza in Rome.
